- Switch off every light on the board.
- Tapping a light toggles it and its four neighbors (up, down, left, right): lights that were on go off, lights that were off come on.
- The order does not matter, and pressing a light twice is the same as not touching it at all.
- Only your time counts, but at the end we show how few presses it could have taken.
Lights Out
What is Lights Out?
In Lights Out you have to switch off every light on the board. The twist: tapping a light toggles it and its four neighbors (up, down, left, right), so lights that were on go off and lights that were off come on. The order does not matter, and pressing a light twice is the same as not touching it at all. Only your time counts, but at the end we show how few presses it could have taken.
The game became famous as Lights Out and has been a classic of logic puzzles ever since. A proven method is "chasing the lights down": going row by row, always press the light directly below a light that is on, and the upper rows go dark one after another. The daily board is 5×5 on Monday and Tuesday, 6×6 on Wednesday and Thursday, and 7×7 from Friday to Sunday.
FAQ
Does the order in which I press the lights matter?
No, all that matters is which light you press and how many times. Pressing the same one twice is the same as not touching it at all.
Is there a method for solving it?
Yes: work from top to bottom, always pressing the cell below a light that is on. The upper rows go dark, and in the end light can only remain in the bottom row, which tells you what to do differently in the top row.
Can I get a hint?
In free play, yes: the hint shows the next press of a shortest solution. The daily puzzle you have to solve on your own.
