What is Kakuro?

Kakuro is a number crossword: you write a number from 1 to 9 in every white cell. The numbers in the black cells give the sum of the run that starts next to them; the number above the diagonal is for the cells to its right, the one below for the cells beneath it. A number can appear only once within the cells of one sum. Below the board you always see the two sums of the selected cell and the sets of numbers that fit them.

If you like sudoku but also fancy a little arithmetic, Kakuro is for you. The key is knowing the sums that can only be made one way: in two cells, 3 is always 1+2, 4 is 1+3, 16 is 7+9 and 17 is 8+9. Where the options of an across sum and a down sum share only one number, you have found the answer. The daily puzzle is 7×7 on Monday and Tuesday and 9×9 on the weekend.

FAQ

What do the two numbers in a black cell mean?

The number above the diagonal is the sum of the across run starting to its right; the one below is the sum of the down run starting beneath it.

Which sums are worth remembering?

The ones that can only be made one way: in two cells 3 = 1+2, 4 = 1+3, 16 = 7+9, 17 = 8+9; in three cells 6 = 1+2+3 and 24 = 7+8+9.

Can a number repeat?

Not within the cells of one sum. The same number can, however, appear in another sum, even in the same row, if a black cell separates them.
